Blackfoot Language Program

The Blackfoot language is taught from Monday to Friday to K4 & K5 and Grades 1-6, four times a week, at 45 minutes per class. The focus is on oral conversational Blackfoot. Along with the language lessons, the students are also learning about Piikanissini, stories, songs, and cultural crafts. The classes also get weekly visits from our Elders and Knowledge Keepers who share stories mostly in Blackfoot and sometimes do crafts with the students.

We also co-ordinate the Monday Morning Assembly blessing where we have a Knowledge Keeper, Ceremonialist/Traditionalist, and/or an Elder who comes in to do a weekly blessing and share words of encouragement with the students from both the Elementary and High School.

The Blackfoot Language Committee comprised of staff from both schools, plan and oversee the cultural and ceremonial activities for the schools. The committee’s mandate is to ensure that Piikanissini is being infused into the school curriculum and activities.
