Division 1 consists of a Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 2/3 and a Grade 3 class. The Division 1 teachers work collaboratively to ensure the success of the students in all areas, but with a focus on literacy and numeracy. Division 1 uses the model School Literacy Project to help with reading and writing. The teachers try to incorporate Piikanissini (Piikani culture, values and language) into all subject areas. The teachers encourage the children to be leaders by modelling and discussing the Piikani values – respect, love, caring, and making good decisions. The students also work with knowledge keepers to learn about the Blackfoot language, culture, and traditions.
Grade 1 is a time of big change for children. They start the year with limited reading and writing abilities and by the end of the year they should be able to read and write simple sentences, count to 100, count to 20 forwards and backwards, add and subtract numbers up to 20, and have a well-rounded view of Community, the past and present, as well as a good understanding of plants and animals, seasonal changes, building things, and senses and creating colour. Children will also enter Grade 2 with more independence and stamina to go through the Grade 2 Curriculum.
Grade 2 and Grade 3 build on these essential skills and go more in-depth. The students read longer stories and start writing more complex sentences and stories. They also learn more about reading comprehension. By the end of Grade 3, the students count, add and subtract to 1000. By the time the students are done Grade 3, they should be able to work independently and have a great understanding of various communities and how most communities are unique and the same.
