Position Summary

Peigan Board of Education is keen in hiring a Principal who will plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. As a school system leader, the main responsibilities will include developing and implementing of policies, programs, curriculum activities and budgets.

Duties and Responsibilities

As Principal, you will be responsible for research, development, and implementation of instructional programming, discipline, extra-curricular activities, PBOE strategic planning, school evaluation initiatives, and community collaboration all designed to promote social, physical, intellectual, and cultural growth for our Piikani Nation children. Additional responsibilities of the Principal include:

  • Reports to Superintendent
  • Supervises all school personnel, directly and/or indirectly
  • Observing, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating staff performance
  • Developing school initiatives which enhance and promote student success
  • Developing and monitoring all budgets as they pertain to school operations
  • Monitoring First Nations Student Success Program including planning and budgets (requisitions, budgets, approval process, monitoring, and collaboration/accounting with PBOE Financial Administrator)
  • Monitoring Special Education Program including planning and budgets (requisitions, budgets, approval process, monitoring, and collaboration/accounting with PBOE Financial Administrator)
  • Ensuring the Alberta Education Program of Studies are being implemented in classrooms
  • Ensuring the ATA Teacher Quality Standards Knowledge, Skills, & Attributes are being attained by teaching staff
  • Chairing meetings (staff, divisional, specialist, etc.)
  • Inter-curricular and extra-curricular supervision
  • Infusion of Piikani First Nations ways of knowing including culture and language programming
  • Strive to develop an energetic, positive, creative school atmosphere
  • Strive to develop teacher mentorship in school
  • Promote Piikanissini in every aspect of a student’s school environment; promoting enriching academic and personal activities for students.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education required, Masters of Education Degree preferred
  • Certified Teacher and Administrator
  • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience combined with five (5) years of Administration and/or Management experience
  • Experience in Land-based learning and curriculum development
  • Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge First Nations culture, traditions and values
  • Ability to speak, read and write Blackfoot considered an asset
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract required

Position Summary

Peigan Board of Education continues to enhance student services through new initiatives such as inclusive education. The Learning Support Teacher works primarily with children who require special instructional services to help them learn and develop to their potential

Position Responsibilities

  • use Alberta Education Program of Studies Educational Outcomes to plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
  • implement Alberta Teacher Association Teacher Quality Standards Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • infuse planning documents and lessons with Piikani ways of knowing/Piikanissini
  • adhere to Peigan Board of Education Policy
  • completion of assessments and reporting as required for funding (including AANDC reporting and compliances)
  • plan and deliver differentiated instruction to students whose learning support requires such teaching as identified in student Individual Program Plans (IPP)
  • refer, participate and plan assessments of students requiring Special Education/Learning Support services
  • establish and communicate clear outcomes for all learning activities
  • assist teachers in preparation of class activities
  • provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
  • identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs
  • instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
  • use relevant technology to support instruction
  • observe and evaluate student’s performance and development
  • provide appropriate feedback on work
  • encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
  • maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development
  • update all attendance records, grading reports, report cards, anecdotal records regularly, accurately and completely
  • prepare required reports on students and activities
  • assist teachers with implementing behavior management strategies to manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures
  • assist teachers with implementing behavior management strategies to maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school
  • assist teachers with implementing behavior management strategies to apply appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary
  • counseling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement
  • participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations
  • participate in school meetings (staff, parent, committee, divisional, specialist, collaborative)
  • communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs including attending Parent Teacher Interviews
  • keep updated through professional development in subject area, teaching resources, methods and new school initiatives and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities

Qualifications & Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Education or higher from an accredited institution
  • Specialization or higher from an accredited institution in the area of inclusive education, learning support/special education
  • Alberta Education Teaching Certification – Interim or Professional
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Intervention Check
