Position: Full Time

Position Summary

The Educational Assistant constitutes part of the PBOE support staff who help teachers carry out the educational mission of the Piikani Nation Secondary School and the Napi’s Playground Elementary School. Under the direction of a teacher, the Educational Assistant will be required to work directly with students. These students may have any of the following: social-emotional, behavioral, or academic needs.

Position Responsibilities

  • Supporting the achievement of student educational goals and objectives outlined by the classroom Teacher and Learning Support Teacher in accordance with the IPP (Individual Program Plan)
  • Working 1:1 with an assigned student
  • Maintaining an EA journal, which includes a log of student behavior, updating student agenda for guardians
  • Work within established structures, including classroom management structures, behavioral rules and IPP expectations, under the supervision of the classroom teacher
  • Developing a consistent routine with the student which includes:
    • Transitions between subjects
    • Transition to other classrooms (I.E. Blackfoot classroom and gymnasium)
    • Preparation for school activities (assemblies and other school initiatives
    • Preparing the student for academic interventions with Teacher and Learning Support Teacher
    • Creating a visual schedule available for the student, and giving multiple cues in preparation for an upcoming change in the daily schedule
  • Preparing additional materials as directed by the teacher creating classroom displays and undertaking other supportive activities with the assigned teacher
  • Assisting with school supervision (recess, lunch)
  • Attending RTI meetings and providing reports upon request to the RTI Team
  • Weekly reports to be submitted to the Learning Support Teacher: these include a daily account of student progress or areas of need, briefly noted and student oriented
  • Available to participate in the online Brain Story Certification (Alberta Family Wellness)

  • Effective organization, flexibility, and multi-tasking
  • Ability to work in a team environment, as well as with limited supervision
  • Ability to deal with adversity in a fast-paced school environment
  • Compassionate and patient are essential characteristics when working with students with identified needs

Education and Requirements

  • High School Diploma and related post-secondary education
  • Knowledge of Blackfoot/Piikani Language & Culture
  • First Aide certificate
  • Criminal Record Check and Child & Youth Information Module Check
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Vaccinations for COVID 19 is mandatory

Title: Elementary Teacher

Position Summary
The Elementary Teacher will be responsible to provide an effective educational program that supports children’s learning and is appropriate to the development age of children attending Napi’s Playground Elementary School (NPES). The incumbent shall have comprehensive knowledge of the Alberta School Act, the Teaching Profession Act, the Alberta Teacher Quality Standards and Piikanissini.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • use Alberta Education Program of Studies Educational Outcomes to plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
  • implement Alberta Teacher Association Teacher Quality Standards Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • infuse planning documents and lessons with Piikani ways of knowing/Piikanissini
  • adhere to Peigan Board of Education Policy
  • establish and communicate clear outcomes for all learning activities
  • provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
  • identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs
  • instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
  • use relevant technology to support instruction
  • observe and evaluate student’s performance and development
  • provide appropriate feedback on work
  • encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
  • participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations
  • participate in school meetings (staff, parent, committee, divisional, specialist, collaborative)
  • communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs including attending Parent Teacher Interviews
  • keep updated through professional development in subject area, teaching resources, methods and new school initiatives and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
  • develop long and short range plans, daily lessons plans, and scope and sequence for each course including assessments practices
  • prepare classroom for class activities
  • refer, participate and plan assessments of students requiring Special Education/Learning Support services
  • plan and deliver differentiated instruction to students whose learning support requires such teaching as identified in student Individual Program Plans (IPP)
  • assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments
  • maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development
  • update all attendance records, grading reports, report cards, anecdotal records regularly, accurately and completely
  • prepare required reports on students and activities
  • manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures
  • maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school
  • apply appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary
  • perform certain learning support duties including student support, counseling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement

Education and Requirements

  • Bachelor of Education or higher from an accredited institution
  • Alberta Education Teaching Certification – Interim or Professional
  • Early Childhood Education Diploma
  • Criminal Record Check and Intervention Check
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Blackfoot Language and Culture

School COVID 19 and Routine Vaccination Clinic

Students ages 12+ are invited and encouraged to receive their 1st and 2nd doses of COVID 19 vaccine.
Routine vaccinations will also be offered.

Students must have a signed consent form from their legal guardian to receive vaccinations.
Consent forms available at PNSS.

PBOE SCHOOLS WILL CONTINUE WITH  ON-LINE LEARNING SEPTEMBER 20 – OCTOBER 1, 2021

PBOE SCHOOLS WILL CONTINUE WITH  ON-LINE LEARNING SEPTEMBER 20 – OCTOBER 1, 2021
At-home learning packages will be delivered  Tuesday, Sept 21 and Tuesday, September 28.

PBOE SCHOOLS WILL REOPEN AS OF MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2021

COHORTS WILL BE IN EFFECT: K5 – GRADE 6 STUDENTS.

As Piikani Nation Covid19 cases remain high, PBOE is ensuring that all precautions are being taken to have students return safely to school.  PBOE will follow Alberta Education’s guideline to cohort K5-Grade 6 students.  Grades 7 – 12 will not be cohorting and will resume regular classes.  K4 will not be cohorting; classes will resume on a Monday to Thursday schedule.

A reminder: If your child/ren have one or more Covid symptoms (coughing, sneezing, fever, headaches, chills or other flu-like symptoms – please keep your child/ren at home until symptoms end. PBOE recommends that your child/ren also book an appointment for a Covid test. Any child/ren who attends school with these symptoms will be required to return home.

Wear a mask on the bus and at school.
Hand sanitize.
Keep our Piikani Nation safe.

In the event that PBOE Schools or Transportation is notified of a positive case in schools or on the bus, PBOE will determine whether operations will continue.

TRANSPORTATION REOPEN TO FORT MACLEOD AND PINCHER CREEK
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021
Buses will be operating to/from Pincher Creek and Fort Macleod.

As Piikani Nation Covid cases remain high, we highly recommend that children and families adhere to Covid protocols.

If your child/ren have one or more Covid symptoms (coughing, sneezing, fever, headaches, chills or other flu-like symptoms) please keep your child/ren at home until symptoms end. PBOE recommends that your child/ren also book an appointment for a Covid test.

Hand sanitize.
Keep our Piikani Nation safe.

In the event that PBOE Transportation is notified of a positive case on the bus, PBOE will determine whether the bus will continue operation.
